Let’s start with the basics, so what is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s all about optimising your website so that it ranks well on search engines such as Google, the goal is to be one of the top results on the first page.  Research from Google states that 80% of users don’t go beyond the first page of results.

Local SEO,

Is about focusing on results that are relevant to the user’s location. For example, if you search for a ‘bakery’ on Google, Google understands that you’re searching for a bakery shop, so it will show bakeries near to your location.

Google is able to give the user results near their location, but this wouldn’t be possible if Google had no idea where the bakeries are located.

So Google has displayed bakeries that are near your location, but results still have to be in a certain order, the results have to be hierarchical. There are ways to ensure that businesses  will show towards the top when the user searches for that business in the correct proximity.

So how do you do that? That’s what Local SEO is for. Search engines such as Google look at certain factors when figuring out who to rank in what order. These factors include your GMB (Google My Business) page and presence across important directories and websites on the internet. You will be able to find a checklist here, this website will give you a good explanation of all the factors to make sure your Local SEO is up to scratch.

If you’re running a business and want to outrank your local competitors, then Local SEO is crucial to make sure people find you. Google state that there has been a 500% increase in mobile searches using the term “near me” in the last 2 years.
