5 Tips to Improve Your Social Media Profiles

Social Media Profile Tips for Businesses

When was the last time you updated your social media profiles? Many businesses are still using profiles that they created when they first signed up to the platforms. Here are 5 tips that will smarten up your social media profiles in no time.

  1. Optimise the images. Make sure the profile and cover photo fall within the recommended dimensions for each network you use. Check to see how the images appear on mobile as well as desktop. It’s also important to use the same images across the board so your audience will be able to recognise you when they visit their favourite social media channel. The current image sizes are:
  • Facebook profile picture: 170 X 170 px
  • Facebook cover photo: 828 X 465 px
  • Twitter profile photo: 400 X 400 px
  • Twitter header image: 1,500 X 500 px
  • Google+ profile picture: 250 X 250 px (minimum)
  • Google+ cover photo: 1080 X 608 px
  • LinkedIn profile photo: 400 X 400 px (minimum)
  • LinkedIn custom background: 1584 X 396 px
  • LinkedIn cover photo: 974 X 330 px
  • LinkedIn banner image: 646 X 220 px
  • Instagram profile picture: 110 X 110 px
  • Pinterest profile picture: 150 X 150 px
  • YouTube profile picture: 800 X 800 px
  • YouTube cover photo: 2,560 X 1,440 px
  1. Are the handles of our channels consistent? This is also an improvement that can be made within minutes. Use the brand name and avoid adding extra words such as the location of your business or a keyword. Keep it to the brand name as it makes it easier for your audience to tag you and to find you.
  2. Keywords need to be positioned in your profile. Adding keywords will make it possible for people to find you when typing in search. Work out your keywords, the words that are most used by your target audience. Add those words to the description areas, bios, in image descriptions and so on. Make sure that the keywords are not just thrown in, they should still be inserted into the text in a logical way. Optimise your copy and avoid leaving any blank areas.
  3. Check the links are working on all your profiles. Click through and replace or correct any that are no longer functional. Don’t forget to include links to all of your social profiles so your fans can easily find you.
  4. Take advantage of pinned posts. Pinned posts are available on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. They are normal updates you make that you pin to the top of your profile. They will stay in the top position until you decide you don’t want it there anymore. Select the updates you are most proud of or the content that is the most important.
